Many women are confused about how to deal with vaginal discharge properly. Because, although in fact most of the vaginal discharge is normal, but this condition often makes it uncomfortable and restless, especially if the vaginal discharge occurs repeatedly.
Leucorrhoea is actually a normal and healthy thing because in the vaginal wall and cervix there are glands that produce fluid, as a form of body defense to maintain the health of female sex organs. Normal vaginal discharge is generally milky white or clear and odorless. Fluid levels will increase at certain times such as during breastfeeding, during sexual intercourse, and during or around menstruation.
Proper vaginal discharge
Normal vaginal discharge does not require special treatment. What needs to be maintained is so that vaginal discharge does not turn out to be abnormal. These changes can be caused by several things, such as bacterial vaginosis infection, antibiotic use, sexually transmitted infections, cervical cancer, use of contraceptive pills, trichomoniasis parasitic infections, or fungal infections. Signs of abnormal vaginal discharge are discoloration and consistency, smell, and itching or pain. There are several treatments that can be done independently, including:- Cold compresses to relieve itching and swelling
- Use a condom or delay sexual relations for a week after treatment.
- If abnormal vaginal discharge lasts more than a week after independent treatment, check with your doctor.
- If vaginal discharge is accompanied by sores, itching, redness, swelling, or pain when urinating, you should also immediately consult a doctor. The doctor will provide treatment based on the cause of your vaginal discharge.
Recognize and prevent abnormal vaginal discharge
Signs of dangerous vaginal discharge include:- The pungent odor arises.
- Itching and redness of the vagina and surrounding area.
- Bleeding or spotting outside of menstruation.
- Leucorrhoea changes color to green or yellow.
- Leucorrhoea becomes thick or sticky.
- Keep the vagina dry and not moist. Keeping the vagina dry can also be done by:
- Use pants that aren't too tight. Don't use stockings too often.
- Wear cotton underwear, not synthetic. Cotton panties allow more air into the vagina and prevent moisture.
- Do not wear underwear while sleeping at night.
- Wash your genitals from front to back after urinating instead.
- The vagina is actually an organ that can clean itself. Using vaginal cleaning fluid actually risks damaging the natural balance of bacteria and fungus in it. This imbalance will trigger bacterial vaginosis. To clean the vagina, use warm water and soap that has no strong scent. But as much as possible, only use water.
- Avoid using perfume, powder on the vagina. Because the use of perfume and soap can also damage the balance of bacteria and fungus found in the vagina.
- Avoid using the following ingredients which can irritate and cause abnormal discharge from the vagina:
- The use of softener or detergent that has a strong scent when washing underwear.
- Scented pads / perfume.
- Scented toilet paper.
- Eat healthy foods with balanced nutrition.
- Take yogurt or supplements that contain lactobacillus.
- Avoid soaking too often in hot water.
- Wash underwear with warm water.
- Change pads regularly when menstruation.
